A Guide to Lesbian Communities in India

India with it bubbling cultural disparity has been probably the most progressive in the most recent decades in acknowledgment and authorization of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals and Queers (LGBTQ). Amongst these, the lesbian community, who are a minority who was often ignored by mainstream society and culture, are slowly being given platforms upon which they can be acknowledged and accompanied. This guide explains the Indian lesbian townships and Child care / Primary Education / Secondary education / Adolescent education / Employment / H. This is in relation to where people can go to find acceptance, support and strength.

The Context for Lesbians in India
Concerning the acceptability of lesbians, lesbians in India experience certain complications which are distinct from other lesbian persons. Cultural norms, pressure from the family and societal prejudices and stereotyping make it nearly impossible to be out and proud. However, for the past few years especially after the scrapping of section 377 which was anti-LGBTQ+ in India in September 2018, the LGBTQ+ in India has gained significant strides. This was a ruling that the Supreme Court of India made which repealed section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that had criminalized consensual same sex relations thus being credit to many activist.

But although, or perhaps because legal advancements have been made, lesbian women still face significant cultural and social barriers. The problems that people face in everyday life, including family pressures, discrimination on the job, and social exclusion in local communities remain Unsolved. Thus, consumer venues and networks where lesbian people may seek and find protection are important.

Body Sanctum: Survival for Lesbians in India

A “safe haven” is an environment in which persons from vulnerable populations can be open and as a result of such, they do not face acts of prejudice or violence against them. For the lesbians in India such places could be liberating not only providing safety, but also feelings of acceptance and fellowship.

1. Web-Based Groups and Sites

However in India the only common and easily accessible place of safety for lesbians today is the cyberspace. Different pages on the Internet and groups in the social network allow women to share experiences, describe the problems faced, and seek recommendations. Pages such as Lesbian Chat India, Lesbian Desi, etc have conceived the means by which lesbians can be in touch, gain information as well as knowledge.
Further, online social network sites like FACE BOOK, INSTAGRAM, and TWITTER provide a number of LGTBQ+ communities where many groups represent lesbians and indian lesbians separately. These groups offer relevance and it is common to find that they set virtual meetings and conferences, webinars, or meetups. These online locations are especially relevant where a gay physical community may not yet have been developed in a smaller city or towns.

2. LGBTQ+ Support Organizations and Non-Governmental Organization

Many organizations exist in India for the support of the LGBTQ+ community and quite a few have a program section or an area exclusively for lesbians. Some of the most prominent organizations include:

- The Naz Foundation (India): Still operating today, the Naz Foundation is one of the oldest and most reputable organizations of sexual minorities in India that focus on the issues of the health and human rights of sexual minorities. The organization also conducts different programs for instance, those that seek to support lesbian and bisexual women.

- Sakhi for Equality: Sakhi is a community-based organisation in Kolkata that has offered lesbian and bisexual women a home for over 25 years. The above group provides support, counseling, and many forms of advocacy.

- The Humsafar Trust: Most of the work done by The Humsafar Trust is based out of Mumbai and it is an LGBTQ+ activist agency that work towards sexual health as well as mental health care. Additionally, it has a telephone help line for anyone needing assistance—they are the only organization for lesbians that I know of in the city.

3. Facilitating Places and Social Interaction

Even as the internet can be said to become part of the social environment of lesbians, there are now identifiable physical environments for the lesbian in the metros of India. They include safer spaces for people of the queer and marginalised sexualities and genders including cafes, special bookshops and centres that offer meetings, forums and counselling.
For instance, organisations like The Delhi Queer Pride and TQ (The Queer Museum) in Delhi are available for the support of the needs of the lesbian minority right from organising themselves into groups in order to share the role of prejudice in their lives, gaining a better understanding of the inequalities that are inflicted on them and fighting for change. Likewise, there are several gay bars, cafes and support group, which operates in Mumbai, and where lesbians can make new friends and perhaps get information.

4. Pride Events and Marches

These have been notable as key visibility points, and a high number of lesbian women engage in Pride parades in India. These events are not only parties, but demonstrations of support as well. They can be meetups and workshops that are solely dedicated towards the lesbians because it still means that they has a community to turn to.
Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata for instance, have big Pride parades that have an open invitation to the entire rainbow, inclusive of lesbians. They also help break and change incorrect perceptions, assert, and foster human interaction and representation.
It is the life and experiences of lesbians that shall be discussed herein together with the challenges they go through in India.

Women in India of the lesbian community may also suffer from hatred and have poor working conditions or their education may be hindered in certain institutions may so wish. These challenges can hinder an individual from going about their day to day business in a real or true to self manner. Therefore, support networks and the availability of safety become a matter of even greater importance; women must drawn support in order to become strong amidst adversities.

Moving Forward: Empowerment and Advocacy

AdvocacyThe future seems bright for the lesbians living in India. As the practice gets more public and the culture changes further, the expectation is that it will be well embraced. Supporting lesbian people and offering them means to be happy and successful remain critical toward becoming an equal nation.
Further peoples’ consciousness raising, increased representation in media and better laws will ensure better and more liberal India. Therefore whilst lesbians in India are not able to seek acceptance and change by coming out in the same way straight people can, they can have social support, access the internet, meet in friends and families houses and join, or attend, Lesbian organized events and therefore have the freedom they deserve.

Conclusion
Feminist organizations are increasingly arising in this nation for lesbians with safe spaces on the Internet as well as on the ground. Pride events, organizations, and peer-support are all helping in-building social coherence and provide the people with strength. However, there continues to be barriers, but thanks to the fight put forth by lesbians and their supporters, these spaces have been guaranteed to still be around. India continues to strive for visibility and equality for lesbian women and slowly but surely the country is improving each year for the lesbian women to live an accurate life.
